Parish Choirs

The Music Ministry of the Church of the Holy Cross consists of eight choirs whose ministry serves the parish: by supporting and inspiring the assembly in song during liturgies, by providing fellowship in supporting its own memberships in life's everyday challenges, and as an outreach to the community in various ways.  All are welcome to become a part of this ministry.  The choirs typically meet from September to June during the calendar year unless noted otherwise.  The diversity of the music styles and flexibility of the schedules provide several opportunities for those who may be called to serve and commit to this ministry.  The choirs include the following:

Children's Choir:  Provides an opportunity for children (kindergarten through eighth grade) to learn about and participate in music ministry at an early age.  The choir is supervised by adults who meet with the children in the choir room at 4:00 PM on the first Saturday of the month from October through June.  The choir rehearses from 4:00-5:00 PM and then sings for the 5:00 Mass that evening.

Chamber Ensemble:  A schola comprised of vocalists and instrumentalists who generally rehearse one Tuesday a month and sing once a month for the 9:15 AM Sunday morning Mass and various Holy Days and special occasions.  The choir sings four part harmony and is often involved with the fleshing out of new music by WLP composer and Parish Music Director, Michael Perza.  The ability to read music is helpful.

Contemporary Choir:  A choir that was formed and sings in the spirit of the folk choirs of yesteryear.  The choir rehearses weekly on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM in the choir room and ministers at the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday mornings.  The choir welcomes instrumentalists and all who can carry a tune.

Gospel Choir:  Sings the music that characterizes and celebrates African American heritage and culture in Gospel music.  The choir is always looking for new members and musicians.  Rehearsals are held weekly on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM in the church worship space.  The choir sings at the 5:00 PM Mass on the fourth Saturday of the month from September through May.

Handbell Choir:  A unique choir that aids in the celebration of liturgies by the ringing of handbells.  The choir meets weekly on Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM in the church worship space and rings once a month at the 9:15 AM Sunday Mass and on special occasions.

Hispanic Choir:  Serves the Hispanic community at the parish by singing for the 1:00 PM Spanish Mass on Sundays.  The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM in the school Music Room.

Traditional Choir:  An adult choir whose tradition is based in singing four part choral music with organ and keyboard accompaniment.  The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the choir room and sings for the 9:15 AM Mass on Sunday mornings.  Instrumentalists are also welcome.

Youth Choir:  Provides an opportunity for teens (9th through 12th grade) to participate in weekend liturgies.  The choir is supervised by young adults and meets weekly for rehearsals on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM in the choir room.  The choir sings contemporary music for the 6:00 PM Youth Mass on Sunday evenings throughout the year.

Additional information for each choir is available by contacting the Parish Music Director.

The cantors lead the assembly in their sung prayer during Masses which are not ministered by choirs.  Cantors also provide the singing at funerals and weddings in the parish.  The ability to lead and read music is helpful.  Any parishioner who is interested in serving the parish in this ministry is asked to call the Parish Music Director.
