Holy Cross brings Home Trophies from SuperNationals VI- Largest Chess Tournament in History

Dover, Del. – The Holy Cross Chess Team earned 14th place out of 74 teams in the K-5 Under 900 Division with several players earned individual honors at the SuperNationals VI chess tournament in Nashville, TN which occurred from May 11-14.  The event, which combines Elementary, Junior High and High School Nationals, is held every four years by the United States Chess Federation. SuperNational VI was the largest rated tournament in history, with the final tally at 5577.

Fourteen Players from Holy Cross attended with outstanding performances all the way around. Between rounds, team members reviewed their games with Grandmaster Ben Finegold, Woman International Chess Master Carolina Blanco, and 2017 US Women’s Champion Sabina Foisor.

The Holy Cross team is coached by Ronald Poliquin, Bob Raczynski, and Steve Holfeld.

Individual Trophy Winners:

K-3 U700 Division (339 players)

-        29th Place Aarush Reddy: (earning 5 out of 7 points)

K-5 U900 Division (515 players):

-        35th Place: Koby Onugu (earning 5.5 out of 7 points)

-        45th Place: Ayush Patel (earning 5 out of 7 points)

-        45th Place (tie): Kosisonna Umobi (earning 5 out of 7 points)
